Insider look at the New Vermeer D24 Drill

By Renée Lauzon-Martin - General Manager, HDD Broker LLC - July 28, 2025

I recently had the opportunity to get hands-on with the new Vermeer D24 drill, and I'm excited to share what makes this next-generation machine a standout in the HDD world. From intuitive automation to smart diagnostics, the D24 is packed with features that operators, crews, and dealers will appreciate.

The ARE System

One of the most impressive upgrades is the Auto Rod Exchange (ARE) system and open-side vise. It's incredibly smooth and intuitive, allowing operators to focus on the job site rather than the pipe cycle. A single button completes the rod changeout, saving up to 19 steps. This kind of automation is a game-changer—it frees up mental bandwidth, boosts productivity and speeds up training time.

Design & Build: Clean, Aggressive, and Purposeful

The D24 sports a clean, aggressive profile with no flashy “Gen 4” branding—just a sleek, modern look. It’s built on the trusted D23x S3 platform, maintaining a familiar power footprint and size while delivering 24,000 lbs of pullback.

Engine: CAT Stage 5 Power

Vermeer has transitioned to a CAT Stage 5, 100 HP engine, replacing the DEUTZ engine used in the D23. This move enhances international support and makes the drill more compliant across global markets. Also includes two batteries improve cold start capability.

Operator Console: High-Tech Meets User-Friendly

The new operator console is a major highlight. It features marine-grade buttons, a full-color touchscreen, and a dial-based navigation system. No more toggles—just intuitive controls that make operation easier and more efficient.

Diagnostics & Reliability: Built to Minimize Downtime

Vermeer tackled a major industry pain point: downtime. The D24 includes:

  • Segmented wiring harnesses for faster repairs (from 9–10 hours down to just a few).
  • Integrated onboard diagnostics that are easy to read and navigate.

This is a huge win for both operators and technicians, especially in a market facing labor shortages.

Value & Availability

The D24 will be priced about 13% higher than the D23, but with its new features, reliability, and ease of use, the value is clear. Production began at the start of the new year, and availability should be strong.

Bonus: It comes with a 3-year / 3,000-hour warranty on both the drill and the engine—making it a solid investment and a hot item once it hits the used market.

Final Thoughts

Vermeer has clearly listened to customer feedback and delivered a drill that reflects their legacy of innovation. The D24 is more than just an upgrade—it’s a smarter, more reliable, and operator-friendly solution for today’s HDD challenges.
