Where did the Vermeer D24 Come From? A Drill History
By Renée Lauzon-Martin - General Manager, HDD Broker LLC - July 29, 2025
I love a good drill release.
With the launch of the D24 in the fall of 2024, Vermeer kicked off a whole new generation of drills. While the name suggests it's part of the D24x40 lineage, the D24 Gen 4 is actually rooted in a different drill line.
So, if you're a drill nerd like me, let's rewind and figure out where the D24 Gen 4 actually comes from. Spoiler alert: it's not where you'd expect.
The D24 Line (What You'd Think It's Based On)
Let's start with the name—D24. Naturally, you'd assume it evolved from the 24x40 line, right? Let's review the heritage of the D24x40.
1993-1997: D24A
1995-2000: D24x40
1997-2005: D24x40A
- Vermeer built about 1,950 of these.
- The undisputed workhorse. There was a time (2012-2017) when its resale value was going up in the used market because of overseas demand.
2005-2015: D24x40 Series 2
- Around 2,500 units built.
- Midway through production (around serial #4000), they upgraded from a plastic operator platform to a metal one and updated the electronics to resemble the newer S3.
- 28,000lbs of pullback
- The latest in the D24x40 line... but here's the twist:
The D24 Gen 4 isn't based on this line at all.
The Real Lineage of the D24 Gen 4
To find the D24 Gen 4's roots, we have to go way back—like, early 2000s back.
2002-2005: D18x22
- Vermeer was trying to crack the 20,000 lbs drill market… and this wasn't it.
2006-2007: D20x22
- Still not quite there. These early models gave Ditch Witch a chance to dominate this size class with their JT2020 model.
2007-2015: D20x22 Series 2
- This one finally hit the mark. It helped Vermeer regain 20,000lbs market share.
2015-2024: D23x30 S3
- This is the actual platform the D24 Gen 4 is built on. Not the D24x40s!
Bonus Tip: The Vermeer D20x22 S3
If you're wondering where the D20x22 S3 fits in, it's from a totally different line. It replaced the D16x20 line and is NOT the successor to the D20x22 Series II.
- D16x20A → D16x20 Series 2 → D20x22 S3
That was to accommodate the emission changes being made at the time.
Stick with me, it'll all make sense!
Wrapping It Up
So the D24 is the replacement for the D23x30 S3! You can see my full walkaround and the specs here.
